A website is a room people walk into
What a first screen has to do in two seconds, and why most sites fail it.

People do not read a website. They walk into it. In the first two seconds they decide whether this is a place for them, the way they would with a shop on the street.
So the first screen is not a headline problem. It is a room problem: light, proportion, one clear thing to look at, and a door that is obviously a door.
Everything else on the page can be rich. The first screen should be calm.
